Many of our clients that have years of managing projects have to build their PMO from the ground up, this is because the majority of their methods, processes, procedures and formats have never been recorded, actually like many companies, they have been relying on their resources to manage the project from inception to close out, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but a very risky thing.
A PMO will provide consistency, standards, training, continuous improvement, technology and support by means of applying a management platform that includes processes and procedures.
These are the most relevant risks and how to mitigate them by implementing a PMO
- Lack of experienced managers: Experienced professionals are hard to come by, and they are also very expensive. Implementing a PMO will provide support, training and monitoring to each professional.
- Lack of standards: if you don’t have standards, there is no way you can improve, PMO will provide a standard and continuous improvement of each projects since its lessons learned are passed on to the rest of the projects
- Administration challenges: Even the most experienced professionals have administrative challenges, sometimes they do not execute their duties. The PMO monitors that the processes and procedures are executed and properly recorded
- Technology: the PMO is always looking for new methods and ways of doing things, technology is a big part of being more efficient and effective, with today’s technology of Apps, Cloud based software and hardware this is possible. Thechnology is implemented by the PMO as pilot programs to rolled out through all projects.
PMO´s are managed differently in every company, however, the same principle applies, it must provide standards, consistency, continuous improvement, innovations and focus on making projects better.
