La Ruta de la Tecnología en Construcción

Comenzamos a aplicar la tecnología como parte de nuestro servicio de Gerencia de Construcción hace 6 años, hemos invertido más de 2MDP en investigación, capacitación, conferencias, pruebas de software y hardware (para una pequeña empresa es bastante). Ahora somos probablemente la única firma de Administración de la Construcción en México que aplica BIM junto con otras 10 APPS como parte de nuestro servicio estándar. No sólo nos gusta la tecnología, sino que la apreciamos y buscamos las mejores aplicaciones, actualizaciones y softwares constantemente.

¿A dónde nos ha llevado esto? En 2009 empezamos como una empresa desconocida, sin clientes, sin asociaciones, ni siquiera una lista de prospectos. Sólo teníamos una visión, ambición y amplio conocimiento de lo que hacemos. Ahora tenemos el honor de representar a compañías de todo el mundo como LEGO, JLL, PRODENSA para sus proyectos de clientes globales y alto perfil donde hemos ahorrado costos y hemos evitado riesgos usando nuestra Plataforma Tecnológica y nuestros fundamentos Gerenciales.

Usar la tecnología suena fácil, pero en realidad es muy difícil para una empresa cambiar sus costumbres o cultura. Cambiar la forma en que las cosas han funcionado durante décadas podría ser un reto, algunas empresas comienzan a cambiar sólo para recaer en las viejas maneras por no saber como implementarlo. Se necesita tiempo para cambiar, se necesita invertir dinero y conocimientos para hacerlo.

También se trata de investigar y aprovechar mejor la tecnología, la mayoría de las aplicaciones y software no hacen lo que necesitamos, se requiere vincular otras aplicaciones para obtener el resultado de eficiencia y efectividad que buscamos (interoperabilidad). Las personas que hacen las aplicaciones no tienen conocimientos técnicos en Construcción o en Gerencia de la Construcción, por lo que diseñan sus aplicaciones lo mejor que pueden.

Algunos corporativos siguen utilizando sus softwares “in-house” y todavía tienen sus computadoras “cerradas” al mundo exterior, imposibilita seguirle el paso a la tecnología. Empresas comerciales de TI funcionan a un ritmo mucho más rápido, que cualquier otro departamento de TI dentro de una empresa.

A lo largo de los años, he investigado más de 100 aplicaciones y softwares; no todas las aplicaciones están a la altura en este momento, siempre busco valor en ellos entre practicidad, costo y amigabilidad, créanme hay muchas aplicaciones no muy amigables. La eficiencia debe ser lo primordial.

Technology Hurdles in Construction Management.

We started applying technology as part of our construction management service 6 years ago, we have invested more than 100K in research, training, conferences, trying out software and hardware (for a small company that’s a lot). Now we are probably the only Construction Management firm in Mexico applying BIM along with 10 other APPS as part of our standard Construction Management service. We not only love technology but we embrace it and we are looking for the best apps and software month after month.

Where has this taken us? In 2009 we started as an unknown company, no clients, no partnerships, not even a list of prospects. We only had a vision, ambition and very good knowledge at what we do. Now we have the honor of representing world wide companies such as LEGO, JLL, PRODENSA for their highest profile projects where we have saved cost and avoided risk using our Construction Management Platform along with our Technology Platform.

Using technology sounds easy, but in reality is very difficult for a company to change its ways or its culture. Changing the way things have worked for decades could be challenging, some companies start to change just to come back again to the old ways because they lacked the “how to”. You do need time to change, you need money invested and you need knowledge to do it.

Its also about researching and how to best leverage technology, the majority of the apps and software´s don’t really do what you need them to do, you have to interoperate other apps to get the result of effectiveness and efficiency you look for. People who make the apps are not technical savvy in Construction or in Construction Management, so they design their apps as well as they can, some apps are not very good at what we need, embrace interoperation.

Some companies still use their “in-house” capability and still have their “secure” systems that unable them to keep with technology. Commercial IT companies run at a much faster pace, than any other IT department within a company.

Ive researched more than 100 apps and software´s, not all the apps are up to standard right now, I always look for value in them, if its too expensive, if its too demanding and not practical, or if its still not better than the “old ways” I simply don’t use it, efficiency should be the driver.
